Santa Anita Track Details
Address: 285 W. Huntington, Arcadia, CA
Meeting: Since the dissolution of Hollywood Park, Santa Anita Park has been the primary venue for the California circuit, with racing taking place most of the year there save for a few months over the summer and select dates in the spring and fall. The biggest races run at the track are the Sanita Anita Derby and Santa Anita Oaks, which serve as the West Coast’s main preps for the Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks, respectively, and the Santa Anita Handicap, otherwise known as “The Big ‘Cap,” a 1 ¼-mile dirt event for older horses. Its position as one of the country’s premier racing venues has been reinforced in recent years, as it has become a frequent host of the Breeders’ Cup, America’s year-end championships.
History: Nestled at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains, Santa Anita is one of America’s oldest and most scenic racetracks. “The Great Race Place” first opened in 1934 and was California’s first formally-established racetrack. Due to its proximity to Los Angeles, the venue has played host to countless stars through the decades and has served as a backdrop for several racing-related movies and TV shows. The track has never hurt for equine stars, either. Some of the most renowned American racehorses of all-time have called the track home, including the legendary Seabiscuit, as well as the brilliant mare Zenyatta, to go along with countless others. In 2007, Santa Anita installed a synthetic track to replace its dirt surface, but by 2010 had transitioned back to a dirt main track.
Facilities: Racing at Santa Anita is conducted over a one-mile dirt oval and a seven-furlong turf course. The view from the grandstand is unparalleled, with panoramic views of the San Gabriel mountains looming over the track. Santa Anita offers many different packages for seating, from general admission to luxury boxes and entire suites. Dining options are also abundant, with everything from standard concessions to fine dining.
