Saudi Cup

When:  February 20, 2021

Where:  King Abdulaziz Racetrack (Riyadh, Saudi Arabia)

Purse: $20,000,000

Race Distance: 1.118miles

History:  The Saudi Cup was first run in 2020 and immediately became the richest Horse Race in the world. The inaugural running attracted controversy following the win by Maximum Security. Despite crossing the line first, the prize money still has not been paid out due to drug issues for the then trainer of the horse.

Being four weeks after the Pegasus World Cup and four weeks before the Dubai World Cup, it allows entrants to potentially take part in all three lucrative races.

Due in large part to the immense prize purse, the Saudi Cup attracts top dirt horses from all over the Globe. In 2021, this continued with several well-known horses being put forward for the second-running of the race. Over 100 horses from nine countries have put their name forward including Preakness winner Swiss Skydiver, Malibu winner Charlatan, and Pegasus World Cup winner Knicks Go.

The race is limited to 14 runners. Two horses are guaranteed a spot in the starting gate with the victors of the Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream Park along with the Champions Cup at Chukyo Racecourse given a 'Win and You're In' berth.

With several potential Breeders' Cup Classic horses in the field. This is a potential guide to how the richest race in the US will go later in the year.

Past Winners:

2020 - Maximum Security*

*Maximum Security crossed the line first, but the winners purse has yet to be paid out. Midnight Bisou finished second.
