History: The Southwest was first run in 1968 and started off as a sprint race called the Southwest Handicap. It wasn’t until the mid-1980’s that the race was stretched out to two turns and began to take shape as a potential Derby prep. The Southwest enjoyed a particularly good year in 1992, when second and third-place finishers, Pine Bluff and Lil E. Tee, won the Preakness Stakes and Kentucky Derby, respectively. Since that seminal moment in the race’s history it has become an important and lucrative prep race that serves as a stepping stone to the Rebel and Arkansas Derby. Other notable winners include Smarty Jones, who won the Derby and Preakness in 2004 before falling just short in the Belmont, as well as eventual champions Smoke Glacken (1997) and Lawyer Ron (2006).
