Sunland Derby Track Details
Address: 1200 Futurity Dr, Sunland Park, NM 88063
Website: www.sunland-park.com
Meeting: Sunland Park conducts a mixed meet for thoroughbreds and quarter horses from late December to late April each year. Live racing is traditionally held on four days each week: Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The track’s marquee race is the Grade 3, $800,000 Sunland Derby, which is a major prep for the Kentucky Derby. It also hosts the $200,000 Sunland Park Oaks, which is a stepping stone to the Kentucky Oaks, and its top quarter horse race is the Grade 1, $350,000 Championship at Sunland Park. The track offers only dirt racing.
History: Opened in 1959 in southern New Mexico, Sunland Park was the only legalized gambling venue in the region for many years. The track is situated just outside the Texas town of El Paso, and it is also a stone’s throw from the Mexican border. Sunland is famous for giving renowned jockeys Jerry Bailey, Pat Valenzuela, and Cash Asmussen their starts. In 1999, to give a boost to the struggling track, New Mexico legislators permitted the installation of slot machines at Sunland. In the ensuing years, purses increased from $35,000 per day in the early 1990’s to now nearly a quarter of a million dollars per day. The track’s premier race, the Sunland Derby, was first run in 2003 and it has since risen to prominence on the Kentucky Derby Trail. Though none of its winners have gone on to win the Derby, Mine That Bird famously finished fourth in the Sunland Derby before going on to capture the Run for the Roses at odds of 50-1.
Facilities: In addition to racing, which is held on a one-mile dirt oval, Sunland Park has a casino, concert venue, and hotel on the grounds, as well as several dining options. The casino has slot machines and many electronic table games, including roulette, blackjack, and poker.
