History:  The Tampa Bay Derby was inaugurated in 1981 and is the main Kentucky Derby prep race held at Tampa Bay Downs. The race took a while to build up steam, but it has become one of the most important Derby preps despite its status as a second-tier qualifier and position on the calendar. In 2007, Street Sense became the first Tampa Bay Derby winner to go on to take the Kentucky Derby, and in 2010 Super Saver won the Derby after finishing third in the Tampa Bay Derby. In 2017, Tampa Derby winner Tapwrit went on to take that year’s Belmont Stakes. Trainer Todd Pletcher has dominated the race in recent years, having won it four times since 2013, including three in a row from 2015 to 2017.
