Turfway Park Track Details
Address: 7500 Turfway Rd, Florence, KY 41042
Website: www.turfway.com
Meeting: Turfway’s meet begins in early December and runs through the end of March/early April. The highlight of the meet is the Grade 3, $200,000 Jeff Ruby Stakes for 3-year-olds, which serves as a minor prep race for the Kentucky Derby; it is the only graded stakes race run at Turfway. The Jeff Ruby Steaks, traditionally run in early March, is accompanied on the same card by the $100,000 Bourbonette Oaks and $100,000 Kentucky Cup Classic, as well as a few other listed stakes. A few other stakes races are also run earlier in the meet. Racing is conducted exclusively on the synthetic surface Polytrack.
History: Kentucky racing’s winter home, Turfway Park opened in Florence, KY in 1959 as Latonia Race Course. The track is located about 10 miles south of the original Latonia Race Track in Covington, KY which hosted thoroughbred racing from 1883 until it was torn down in 1939. The original Latonia was home to the Latonia Derby, which rivaled the Kentucky Derby in prestige for many years and shared many of the same horses. The track was given its current name by Jerry Carroll, who purchased the facility in 1986. Carroll sold the track in 1999 to Harrah’s Entertainment and the Keeneland Association, the latter of which continues to oversee Turfway. The track’s main race, the Spiral Stakes (now the Jeff Ruby Steaks), was inaugurated in 1972 and is still a minor prep race for the Kentucky Derby. In 2011, Animal Kingdom won the Spiral en route to an upset score in the Derby. Turfway became the first racetrack in America to run races on Polytrack when the synthetic surface was installed in 2005.
Facilities: Turfway’s grandstand is a five-story, fully-enclosed building. In 2003, Turfway became the first track to install Super Carrels, where players can watch replays, place bets, and even order food. The track, which was chosen for its ability to withstand wintry conditions, measures one mile around.
