History: A significant race on the road to the Derby Stakes, which is Britain’s richest horse race. The Vertem Futurity Trophy is not just a step on the road to America’s most important horse race.
Established in 1961 as the Timeform Gold Cup, the race has seen several name changes due to new title sponsorship. It has had the current name since 2018.
The 2019 edition did not take place at Doncaster as scheduled due to water-logging, racing was abandoned at this venue. Nearby Newcastle racecourse stepped in on its Tapeta track to host the event. It was not the first time Doncaster did not host the race as Newcastle also hosted the race in 1989 with the 2006 edition taking place at Newbury.
Traditionally it takes place on turf and is open to two year-olds. It is classified as a Grade I flat race.
