The Daily Double is the most basic form of multi-race betting and is simply picking the winner of two consecutive races. The name harkens back to a time when the bet was offered only one time per day at racetracks, but it is now available on nearly every race provided there’s a subsequent one to pair it with. The double can be played for as little as $1 at most tracks and must be placed before the start of the first race (or leg).
Though the object is of course to be right, typically you’re going to want to isolate a few main contenders and press your strongest opinions when playing the double, which means you need to be more discerning than using every horse you think can win. Using too many horses in each leg will seriously dilute the value of playing it, and though big payouts can occasionally arise from a pair of longshots coming in, for the most part you’re going to want to identify two races you feel confident about and bet significantly more than the minimum. Unlike the other multi-race horizontal wagers, you can actually see what the expected payout is for each combination you use in the double, so you’ll be able to decide ahead of time whether or not you’re getting good value on your bet.
Why play it?
The beauty of the daily double is that you can play it on almost any race. This allows you to be selective about when you play it and choose only pairs of races that you like or have strong opinions in, which is not the case for the longer multi-race bets. It’s also the simplest of the horizontals, since you’re only dealing with two races, so it makes a good stepping stone if you’re looking to broaden your horizons in the world of horse betting.
