History:  The Grade 1 American Pharoah was inaugurated in 1970 and has long been one of the most prestigious races for 2-year-olds on the West Coast. It first achieved graded status in 1973 and became a Grade 1 event in 1980. Though it was downgraded back to a Grade 2 in 1993, it regained Grade 1 status in 2007 and has remained at that level ever since. In addition to its role as one of the first races on the Road to the Kentucky Derby, the American Pharoah also serves as an important prep for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, to which its winner receives an automatic entry. The race was originally called the Norfolk, a name it carried for over four decades, before it became the FrontRunner in 2011. In 2018, it was renamed again to the American Pharoah, who won the race in 2014 and became racing’s 12th Triple Crown winner a year later. Other notable winners include Chief’s Crown, Best Pal, Bertrando, Lookin At Lucky, and Nyquist. In 1980, it was run in two divisions.
