History: The Gotham, named for New York City itself, the place where Aqueduct resides, was first run in 1953 at Jamaica Racetrack. Following the closure of Jamaica, the race was moved to the Big A in 1960, where it has taken place ever since. The race is the penultimate leg of the New York series of Kentucky Derby prep races which culminates with the Wood Memorial in early April. Though it plays second fiddle to the Wood on the NYRA circuit, the Gotham has been an important prep race in its own right, and was won by the immortal Triple Crown winner Secretariat in 1973. The race has also been won by Racing Hall of Famers Native Dancer (1953), Dr. Fager (1967), and Easy Goer (1989).
