Meeting: Remington holds two separate meets: one for thoroughbreds and one for a variety of different breeds, including quarter horses, paints, and appaloosas. The thoroughbred meet begins in late August and runs through the middle of December. The meet is headlined by the Grade 3, $400,000 Oklahoma Derby, which attracts some of the top 3-year-olds from around the country. Oklahoma Derby Day features seven other stakes races, including the Derby’s filly counterpart, the $200,000 Remington Park Oaks. Other notable thoroughbred races at the track include the $400,000 Springboard Mile for 2-year-olds in December, and a day in mid-October with eight Oklahoma-bred stakes races. The mixed breed meet begins in early March and ends at the beginning of June. The meet features the richest race the track offers, the Grade 1, $1 million Heritage Place Futurity, as well as the Grade 1, $800,000 Remington Park Futurity for Oklahoma-breds.
History: Remington Park opened on September 1, 1988 in Oklahoma City, OK, and was the first world-class parimutuel track in Oklahoma. The track was built by Edward DeBartolo Sr., who also owned Thistledown and Louisiana Downs. At the time of its creation, it was the first track in the country to use a synthetic surface for its main track, however the experiment was ultimately a failure as the new material, called Equitrack, could not withstand the very warm summer months in Oklahoma. It wouldn’t be until 2005 that another track would install a synthetic surface, when Turfway utilized Polytrack for its racing oval, which remains to this day. In 2005, Remington became a racino with the installation of 750 slot machines on the premises. The track is now owned by Global Gaming RP, a subsidiary of the Chickasaw Nation, who purchased the facility via auction in 2009 from Magna Entertainment Corporation.
Facilities: There are many options to take in the racing at Remington Park, from regular grandstand seats to luxury suites. There is also a casino on the grounds with slot machines, as well as a variety of restaurants and bars, and even a venue in which to take in live music. Racing is conducted over a one-mile dirt main track and a seven-furlong turf course.
