History:  First run as the Santa Catalina Handicap in 1935 at Santa Anita Park’s inaugural meet, the Robert B. Lewis was open to older horses for much of its early history. It wasn’t until 1964, when it became the Santa Catalina Stakes, that it was restricted to 3-year-olds and run at its customary 1 1/16-mile distance. The race has since become an important early Derby prep in California, and in 2007 it was given its current name to honor the late racehorse owner Robert Lewis. Notable winners include Sham (1973), who is best known for his duels with Secretariat during the 1973 Triple Crown, Ferdinand (1986), who became the first horse to win both the Santa Catalina and Kentucky Derby, and I’ll Have Another, who pulled off the Robert Lewis-Derby double in 2012. Lewis’ own Charismatic finished fifth in the 1999 edition of the race but would go on to win the Kentucky Derby later that year.
