History: Originally entitled the San Felipe Handicap, the first race took place in 1935 and over the first 15 years of the race, it saw several changes. For the first six runnings it was open to colts and geldings of three years old or above. In 1941 it was restricted to only three year-olds and come 1952 the gender of the horse was removed from the racing conditions. It started life as a handicap until 1941 and returned as a handicapped race from 1952 through to 1990. It started off as a six furlong race and steadily increased in distance until 1952, when it settled at a mile and one sixteenth, the distance it has stayed at ever since. Bob Baffett has won the race seven times as a trainer with Chris McCarron the winningest jockey with seven wins also.
