Race Distance: 1 1/8 mile
History: Most will agree that this is by far the biggest race on the West coast in the run up to any Kentucky Derby. Currently scheduled four weeks out from the big race itself, the Santa Anita Derby offers 100 points in the Road and thus assures the victor of a spot at the Run for the Roses. Three other Derby Prep races take place at Santa Anita Park but this is the most prestigious and offers the biggest purse.
For three years (2008-2010) the race did not take place on dirt, rather a Cushion Track and Pro-Ride artificial surfaces. Come 2011 however it returned to the standard dirt surface that is preeminent across US Horse Race Tracks.
Bob Baffert has trained no fewer than nine winning horses at the race with Gary Stevens holding the record of the same number when it comes to jockey victories.
