History:  Named for Sham, the winner of the 1973 Santa Anita Derby who famously butted heads with Secretariat throughout the Triple Crown series of that year, the race was inaugurated in 2001 and is run at a distance of one mile in early January. The Sham is one of the country’s newest Kentucky Derby prep races, however it has also been quite productive in its brief existence. In 2005, Giacomo finished third in the Sham before upsetting the Derby at odds of 50-1. In more recent years, the race has produced two Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winners, Tapizar, who won the Sham in 2011, and Goldencents, who prevailed in 2013.
