History: One of the newest Kentucky Derby prep races, the Smarty Jones was first run in 2008 and is named for the winner of the 2004 Derby and Preakness, who swept a series of three Derby preps at Oaklawn Park that same year. The Smarty Jones is the first of now four prep races run at the Arkansas track, the others being the Southwest, the Rebel, and the Arkansas Derby, and has become increasingly popular due to its substantial purse. Though the race has yet to launch a successful Kentucky Derby bid, it has produced a few notable winners, including 2013 3-Year-Old Champion Will Take Charge (2013), Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winner Caleb’s Posse (2011), and multiple Grade 1 winner Flat Out (2009).
