History:  At one time in its illustrious history, the Withers was one of the preeminent races for 3-year-olds in the country. The race, inaugurated in 1874 and named for prominent owner David Dunham Withers, was sandwiched between the Triple Crown races and nearly rivaled them in stature during the first half of the 20th century. The Withers was often used as a stepping stone to the Belmont Stakes, and was utilized by Triple Crown winners Sir Barton (1919), Omaha (1935), and Count Fleet (1943). The race has since diminished greatly in importance, however it continues to produce quality Derby horses, including its 2013 winner, Revolutionary, who finished third in the ‘Run for the Roses’. Other notable winners include the legendary Man o’ War (1920), Jaipur (1962), and Dr. Fager (1967).
