Wood Memorial Stakes

Race Distance: 1 1/8 mile

History:  The Wood Memorial Stakes has flitted between a Grade II and I race since the inception of the grading system. It is currently considered a Grade II race and takes place four weeks before the Kentucky Derby along with the Blue Grass Stakes and the Santa Anita Derby.

2020 will be the first time since the first running of 1925 where the race will not be run. It was cancelled due to the Coronavirus outbreak that spread over the Globe. The race ran every year throughout the second World War.

In the year Secretariat famously won the Triple Crown in 1973, arguably the most famous horse in US history was unable to win the Wood Memorial, finishing third behind winner Angle Light.
