14:25 Glorious Goodwood - Bonhams Thoroughbred Stakes
It's hardly been a Glorious Goodwood to remember for my wallet thus far, so perhaps favourite backing in the second race of the day is a foolish errand. Nevertheless, there's lots to like about AL MUSMAK for Roger Varian in here who had the reopposing Lead Artist comfortably behind him in third last time out in a Listed contest and looks ready to strike again up in class now he has seemingly shaken off whatever was causing his below par efforts earlier on in the campaign.
Last season Varian's charge was mixing it with some high class horses who have gone on to be exceptional three year olds and while I doubt he'll hit the class of Rosallion - a horse he chased home on his second ever start - I do think there is plenty of improvement left in this Night Of Thunder colt. Dancing Gemini is probably the one I'd fear most as his Derby run was no disgrace and I'm happy to forgive a not quite top notch three year old in the Eclipse, but Al Musmak looks a standout bet in this second race on the card.
15:00 Glorious Goodwood - Coral Golden Mile
One of the toughest races of the week for connections and punters is the Golden Mile and it is going to take a well handicapped horse to scoop this prize one suspects. There are undoubtedly plenty in here lurking but I'm in a forgiving mood and am going to chance a horse I put up last time - he subsequently ran no race whatsoever on soft at Sandown - and that is CLASSIC for Richard Hannon.
The draw is often crucial in this race and I'm more than happy to see Classic given stall three in his quest to bounce back from last time's disappointment. Hannon is adamant he wants the ground rattling fast and with the summer finally arriving in Britain he should be sure of that, so with pace all over for Pat Dobbs' mount to get a toe into the race from. Holloway Boy is another I've supported recently with little success who I'll be praying doesn't get the lead early and feel in a determined mood, but I think Classic has the potential to be the best of this bunch.
