The return of racing to Churchill Downs later this month doesn’t just bring about a sigh of relief to fans of the sport across the country but also starts to put the roadmap in place for some of the big events later in the year.

The new Spring Stakes Schedule at the course has added one Prep Race for the Kentucky Derby with the Matt Winn Stakes but not only that, two automatic spots for races at the 2020 Breeders’ Cup were due to be given out and happily, both races are still on the calendar.

We’ll start with the $500,000 Group II Stephen Foster Handicap, which is set for the final day of this event, June 27. This is the richest event of the 26-day meet with the horse that crosses the line first given a starting berth at the $6,000,000 Breeders’ Cup Classic at Keeneland in November. This is a huge opportunity for owners and trainers to get their horse into the race as there were doubts a couple of weeks ago whether this race would be able to even take place.

On the same day, we’ll see a horse granted a spot in the starting gate for the Breeders’ Cup Distaff. The winner of the $200,000 Group II Fleur de Lis Handicap will be able to take their spot at Keeneland in November.

Both these races were on the original Stakes Schedule before the Covid-19 outbreak and stick to their Saturday 27 June spot that they had in the initial calendar for Spring at Churchill Downs.
