With the Kentucky Derby now firmly galloping into view over the horizon, you wouldn’t be blamed for thinking that the most famous horses were set to take to the track for the most exciting two minutes in sport. If you thought that then you’d probably be mistaken as this year despite Tiz the Law being a wonderful horse who has a shot at the Triple Crown, the most famous horse currently racing in the States is set to take to the track on Sunday at Del Mar.

Maximum Security has rarely been away from front and center of the Horse Racing column inches. Having won the Grade I Florida Derby and the Haskell, it would seem like he was a mighty fine horse worthy of all the attention just because of his results but they aren’t the reason he’s so well known.

Being disqualified after crossing the line first in the 2019 Kentucky Derby is always going to make the casual fan remember the name. The Kentucky Derby is the one time that even those not remotely interested in Horse Racing cast their eye towards the TV screen and do a bit of Googling.

Couple that with his potential disqualification at the Saudi Cup, which would not have moved the needle but for the fact it came because of federal drug charges against his trainer. That part of the equation once more thrust the horse back into the limelight.

It is such a shame that people don’t look at such a great horse and speak about his on-track achievements without mentioning the issues which he cannot control. There is little doubt whatsoever that Maximum Security is one helluva horse. You don’t have a record that he has without being one of the finest flat horses in the world.

This Saturday will mark his second appearance on track under the tutelage of Bob Baffert. The first saw a victory in the San Diego Handicap but the write-ups weren’t exactly glowing. However looking back it is probably fair to say that the performance was better than what we initially thought. He hadn’t raced since February, had changed trainers and had a new jockey aboard. These things shouldn’t be taken lightly, particularly not the rustiness or the new jockey. Other horses were run aggressively against him and he still managed to get to the line first, if only by a nose and in doing so, beating two of his primary rivals for Sunday’s race.

In terms of betting I’m not sure he’ll be a value play as the Morning Line has opened with him 1/1 to win and I expect money to keep coming in on him so he’ll go off at an even shorter price.

Yet just seeing him run is a joy unto itself and a confident performance here will surely get him to the point where he’ll be one of the favorites for the Breeders’ Cup Classic. A win on Saturday will ensure an all-expenses paid spot in the starting gate for that race but not only that, a win will put Maximum Security slap bang in the center of the conversation surrounding that race.

Our in-house handicapper will be here on Friday with his preview of the race and you can please your bets now using the links in our race card above...
