The highlight of the Breeders’ Cup is still the best part of three and a half months away but the first rankings came out looking towards the Breeders’ Cup Classic and it is winner of the Stephen Foster Stakes, Tom’s d’Etat who leads the field among the 38-person panel who will vote on their top ten horses every week from now up until the race itself in November.
Under the tutelage of Albert M. Stall Jr. the seven-year-old is riding a four race winning streak dating back to the Grade II Hagyard Fayetee Stakes at Keeneland last October and took in the Grade I Clark Stakes at Churchill Downs.
Second-place on the list is one of the most interesting horses in north America at the moment. Maximum Security was stripped of his Kentucky Derby last year and his win at the Saudi Cup is still up for scrutiny following the charges levied against former trainer Jason Servis. The four-year-old makes his long awaited return at Del Mar this weekend in his first race under new trainer Bob Baffert. A strong outing there and he’ll likely move towards top spot.
Two Kentucky Derby contenders made the list with Belmont winner Tiz the Law in third place followed by Santa Anita Derby victor Honor A.P. in sixth place. This certainly seems high for the latter.
Midnight Bisou has been a wonderful horse and was second behind Maximum Security in the Saudi Cup. She could well be elevated to first-place pending the decision of whether to disqualify Maximum Security. Long thought of as a potential for the Distaff where she’s twice failed to win. Could this be third time lucky or will Steve Amussen try her in the biggest race of the lot instead?
