Though the Kentucky Derby might garner more attention nationally, it pales in comparison to Breeders’ Cup Saturday in terms of quality. From top to bottom, the Breeders’ Cup Saturday card is one of the finest days of racing in the entire world, with nine Grade 1 stakes races worth more than $20 million.
The day is headlined by the Grade 1, $6 million Classic, which pits the country’s best older dirt horses against one another in a race that often determines who wins Horse of the Year.
Many other divisional titles are typically decided by their respective Breeders’ Cup races, with the $4 million Turf, $2 million Filly & Mare Turf, $2 million Distaff, $2 million Mile, $2 million Sprint, $1 million Turf Sprint, $1 million Filly & Mare Sprint and $1 million Dirt Mile also on the Saturday card. In 2015 the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities listed three Breeders’ Cup races among the top in the world, including the Classic (4th), Turf (10th), and Mile (12th).
