Race 6 (Dirt Mile)

The biggest question that needs to be answered in the Dirt Mile is do you believe Knicks Go (#5) and Complexity (#10) will be able to repeat their respective last-out races in this spot? If you do, this essentially becomes a two-horse race between them, however I have my doubts about these horses.

Knicks Go is my preference of the pair as his smashing recent victory was at least accomplished over this track. I think the 107 Beyer Speed Figure he earned for the performance is perfectly legitimate, and that now makes two runaway scores for him since he was transferred to Brad Cox for his 2020 campaign, however he’s been allowed to run unopposed early in each of those starts before pouring it on in the stretch. He figures to take a lot more pace pressure in this race, though it may not matter if he’s able to maintain the current form he’s in.

I also believe in the 110 Beyer Complexity earned for his win in the G2 Kelso, but the stumbling block for me is that he’s been dreadful each of the two times he’s been shipped outside of New York. The other issue with him is that while he’s shown a proficiency for this distance, he could struggle with the two-turn configuration of going a mile on the Keeneland main track. He obviously has the talent to win, but I think he’s going to be a massive underlay.

The two price horses I like in this race are Art Collector (#1) and Silver Dust (#3). I’m shocked the former was installed at 6-1 on the morning line, and as such he’s my top pick in the Dirt Mile, though I doubt we’re able to lock in those odds on him. He did take a noticeable step back in the G1 Preakness in which he tracked the pace along the inside and came up empty in the stretch, but his connections may have felt obligated to run there after missing the Derby and this horse is undefeated in Kentucky this year. He actually defeated Preakness winner Swiss Skydiver over this track in the G2 Blue Grass, and if he gets back to that kind of effort he’s going to have a big shot.

Silver Dust is more of an aspirational pick as a ‘main’ play — he’s going to need some things to break his way to have a chance — but he could be the right in-form horse in a race that has some major question marks looming over the favorites. What you see is what you get with Silver Dust: he’s an honest performer that almost always gives a solid account of himself. If a few others fail to show up with their best effort, he can absolutely get involved and potentially win at a big price.
