Deserving Favorite Monomoy Girl Gives Cox Another BC Win

If there was a titanic matchup on the Breeders' Cup card it came from this race, the Distaff. In one corner is the seasoned mare for Brad Cox, Monomoy Girl (4-5) in her last race, and in the other, Kenny McPeek's young upstart and the Preakness champ, Swiss Skydiver (5-2).
Everyone knew this would be a race for the ages, and it was quite a race. At the break, Swiss Skydiver stumbled badly, losing 2 lengths. Robby A. tried to cut her in on the backstretch, but it was not enough--she finished 7th.
Longer shot Valiance (14-1), who won the Spinster (G1) at Keeneland, finished a solid second. But, none could catch Cox's Monomoy Girl in the deep. Florent Geroux did not have an easy trip breaking from the outside, but he was patient, guiding his superstar along in the face of a difficult trip.
After 18 months off due to an injury, she returned this year better than ever. As the deserving favorite, she proved she is a HOF horse, and she rewarded her fans with a punctuating win. Will we see Monomoy again? She will be sold tomorrow in the Fasig-Tipton Sale at Keeneland.
Whatever happens, she will be a champion. That gives Brad Cox his 4th win at this year's BC, which ties Richard Mandella's record. Cox is not done yet, with 2 more races on the card.
As for Swiss Skydiver, McPeek treated us to a fabulous year! He has promised that she will return, and we hope she can continue her meteoric rise to stardom!
