The Euro contingent looks formidable in this year’s edition of the Juvenile Turf, but I happen to have developed a strong fondness for Outadore (#8), who I believe is America’s best hope in this race. Outadore has been super impressive through two career starts, and though he’s yet to run beyond 6 ½ furlongs, he looks like a horse who is going to appreciate more ground. His last start, a win in the Juvenile Turf Sprint at Kentucky Downs, certainly gave that impression. He tracked a fast pace on soft ground and powered home an easy winner over a course that tends to play longer than the listed distance might suggest. Furthermore, that performance has been flattered by a few horses running significantly better in subsequent starts, including fifth-place finisher Bodeheimer, who won the Indian Summer at Keeneland in his next start. While I respect the Euros, none of them are unbeatable, and I think Outadore may be a standout in a race that seems to lack such a runner.

I tend to defer to overseas bookmakers when parsing through the foreign runners, and the odds would have you believe that Cadillac (#5) and Battleground (#9) are the clear choices, which I’m pretty much in accord with. While horses like Sealiway (#1) and New Mandate (#2) have ostensibly run faster races, Cadillac and Battleground appear as if they’re going to relish this trip on firm ground more. Aside from Outadore the American runners are mostly underwhelming, so I think it makes sense to take these shippers very seriously and I’ll be using all of the above in some capacity.

I considered making Gretzky the Great (#11) a ‘main’ play, but ultimately I couldn’t bring myself to do it. This horse is probably the most reliable runner in the field, but I have major concerns about his latest win in the G1 Summer at Woodbine. On paper it looks like his most impressive victory and should make him tough to beat in this spot, however that was not a strong G1 and every one of the bottom four finishers has come back to bomb in their next starts. There seems to be a high probability that the 82 Beyer Speed Figure he earned for that win is grossly inflated, and as such he’s probably going to be an underlay in this race.
