Post 14 is obviously not ideal, but it’s going to take more than a wide trip for Golden Pal (#14) to get beat in the Juvenile Turf Sprint. There are some others with appeal in this race, but none are on the level of this son of the brilliant turf sprinter Lady Shipman, who’s unsurprisingly been excellent in both his tries on the lawn. After losing his dirt debut at Gulfstream Park, he was shipped to Royal Ascot, where he nearly won the Group 2 Norfolk on softer ground. When he returned to the States to contest the Skidmore at Saratoga on a firm turf course, which is likely to be the case again at Keeneland on Friday, he absolutely toyed with a quality field. He has the early speed to overcome his wide draw and if he gets back to his smashing Skidmore victory the others are running for second.

Even in addition to Golden Pal, Wesley Ward seems to have a very strong hand in this race, which is predictable considering juvenile turf sprints are his forte. I believe Ward’s After Five (#9) is the most intriguing alternative to the favorite. Although he’s still a maiden, this horse has run very well in both of his career starts, especially last time when he nearly overcame a subtly difficult trip to win the G3 Futurity at Belmont Park. After Five broke well in that race and settled just off the pace, but he was shuffled to the back of the pack by the time the field turned for home and came with a strong run in the stretch to miss by a half-length. If Jose Ortiz can attain a more forward position in this spot and Golden Pal fails to run his best race for whatever reason, I think After Five is a likely upsetter.

The other runner I have a keen interest in is Dirty Dangle (#12). This is a big step up in class for this filly, but she hardly could’ve been more impressive in her turf debut in the Woodbine Cares, in which she coolly tracked the pace before blasting past the field in the stretch. She was a private purchase out of that race and is now in the barn of Mark Casse, and if she takes another step forward for her new connections she can have a say in the outcome.
