Veteran Whitmore and Ron Moquett Score in the Sprint

The Sprint on the dirt was going to be a war, as the speed-favoring track created a situation where frontend runners had the advantage. Bettors tagged Steve Asmussen's Yaupon as the 2-1 favorite.
None were as good as the humble Ron Moquett's veteran 7-yr-old, Whitmore. With Irad Ortiz aboard, he guided him in his 38th start to Moquett's first Breeders' Cup win! At 14-1, the fractious gelding did not want to enter the starting gate without first kicking up a storm.
When they broke, Moquett's charge positioned himself mid-pack, waiting for the opportunity to move. As Jasper Prince and Empire of Gold led, C Z Rocket made a move on the outside towards the top of the stretch. But, it was Whitmore that cut towards the inner, and then he turned it on and never looked back. This was his 4th attempt and it was worth the wait.
