Several iconic names have won this race over the years, though the most illustrious is perhaps the 2004 winner, Al Eile, who always saved his best form for Aintree. The John Queally-trained gelding was never able to show his ability at the Cheltenham Festival, but he made Aintree his own, winning this race and then going on to win the Aintree Hurdle three times - in 2005, 2007 and 2008. 

As a Grade 1 juvenile contest, the path to the Anniversary Hurdle is a straightforward one, and you can identify key contenders by keeping an eye on the key juvenile contests throughout the season. Runners regularly run at Cheltenham the month before heading here, in either the Triumph Hurdle or the Fred Winter. Other races to note through the season include the Grade 1 juvenile contest at Chepstow on Welsh National day, the Victor Ludorum Hurdle at Haydock, the Triumph Hurdle Trial at Cheltenham, and the Spring Juvenile Hurdle at Leopardstown.

AP McCoy and Robert Thornton were at the top of the sport for years and both picked up three wins in this race during their careers. McCoy won with Zabadi (1996), Hors La Loi III (1999), and Binocular (2008), while Thornton won with Katchit (2007), Walkon (2009), and Grumeti (2012).

Alan King is known for his juvenile winners and he has picked up four wins in this famous Aintree contest to date. King tasted success with Katchit (2007), Walkon (2009), Grumeti (2012), and L'unique (2013).
