HorseRacing Experts Covering all Of Tomorrow’s Horse Racing Cards
Underneath each racecard you'll see a section called "Reading The Racecard" where you can find a key of all the abbreviations used.
Racecards are available on site five days before a race takes place and sometimes ahead of that. So you can access cards five days in advance and won't need to wait until the day of the race to see the runners and riders and study the form, which is crucial to successful race reading.
All our data is provided by the Racing Post, giving you trustworthy data and expert opinions on all of the horses running today.
How To Read Tomorrow’s Racecards
At HorseRacing.net, we've carefully designed our horse racing cards to be easily understandable for both newcomers and seasoned race readers. When you select a race, several key factors should be considered, including the race specifics (such as distance and ground conditions), each horse’s attributes (like past performance and weight carried), the jockey, trainer, and, of course, the current odds.
There’s no single correct way to read a UK horse racing card, and everyone has their own preferred criteria. Our goal is to present the essential information bettors need to make informed bets in a clear and concise format.
Key Components of a Racecard
When reading horse racing cards, you can consider all or some of these factors. Additionally, some bettors prefer to observe the horses in the paddock before placing a bet, as this can provide insight into each horse’s condition and temperament.
Race Information
At the top of each racecard, you’ll find critical race details alongside the date, course, race time, class, and prize money. Key aspects to consider include:
- Type of Race: This could be a flat race, a jumps race (hurdles/chase), or on various surfaces like turf or all-weather. Races might be restricted to certain horses, such as those only for fillies or mares, horses of a specific class, or maiden horses (those that haven't won a race). There may also be age restrictions, as seen in Classic races like the Derby, which are for three-year-olds only.
- Race Distance: Distances range from short sprints (5 furlongs) to long endurance races (up to 4 ½ miles). Distances are not expressed in decimals but in miles, furlongs, and yards. In shorter races, horses often run in a straight line, while longer races may involve multiple laps.
- Going: This term refers to the ground conditions at the race track, which can range from firmer (faster) to softer (slower), depending on recent weather.
Horse Name
The horse's name is crucial as it's what the commentator will call on race day. Clicking the name on our site provides additional details, including the horse's sex, owner, and lineage (sire and dam), along with its full career record.
Horse Number
For some bettors, the horse number helps identify their chosen horse in the race. Others might use it as a key factor if they have a lucky number.
Draw
In flat races, horses start from numbered stalls. The draw indicates whether a horse begins from the inside, middle, or outside of the track. Some courses have a track bias favoring certain stalls, influenced by factors like recent rain, field size, or race distance. Race pace is another aspect to consider when evaluating the draw, as positioning behind pacemakers can be advantageous.
Colours/Silks
The colours worn by the jockey help you spot your horse during the race. For beginners, choosing a bet based on favourite colours can be part of the decision-making process.
Form
A horse’s recent form, displayed as numbers and letters, provides a quick reference to its past performance. Horses with 1’s and 2’s (1st and 2nd places) are generally more favoured than those with F (fell) or P (pulled up). Analyzing form is vital in assessing a horse’s chances of winning.
Days Since Last Run
Horses vary in their performance based on how recently they’ve raced. The small italic number next to the horse's name shows the number of days since its last race.
Age
Most races are open to horses of all ages, but some are restricted to specific age groups. The horse’s age is clearly displayed below its name on our racecards.
Weight
Weight is particularly crucial in handicap races. Each horse is assigned a specific weight to carry, including the jockey's weight and any additional plates in the saddle. This information is prominently displayed next to the horse's age on our racecards.
Ratings
Our racecards feature three types of horse ratings to help assess recent performance. These ratings are specific to the race type (flat, hurdle, or steeplechase):
- OR (Official Ratings: Used in handicap races to determine the weight a horse should carry.
- RPR (Racing Post Rating: An independent rating from Racing Post experts.
- Topspeed Rating: Another Racing Post rating focused on the horse's speed, though remember that stamina can be just as important as speed.
Jockey
The jockey can significantly impact a race, and some bettors choose horses based on who’s riding. Conversely, others might avoid certain horses due to the jockey. Next to the jockey's name, you’ll find their win percentage or strike rate over the last 30 days. You can also click on the jockey’s name for more detailed analysis of their recent rides.
Trainer
Like jockeys, many bettors follow specific trainers, especially those with a long history of success. Some trainers excel at particular racecourses or with specific types of horses. A trainer's recent form, displayed as a win percentage over the last 30 days, can influence betting decisions. Clicking on the trainer's name reveals their recent record.
Spotlight Comment
This brief comment provides insight into each horse’s chance in the race, written by Spotlight writers at the Racing Post. These comments offer a quick overview of all the runners.
Spotlight Race Verdict
The Spotlight Race Verdict offers an expert opinion on the likely winner of the race. If you prefer not to choose your own horse, you can rely on Spotlight’s reasoning.
Number of Tips
We compile tips from top industry experts and display the total number of tips each horse has received. Typically, horses with more tips have shorter odds, though this isn’t always the case.
Odds
Odds are a crucial factor in betting decisions. Whether you view them first or last, it’s important to consider whether the odds represent good value. Even if a horse seems likely to win, poor odds might make it less attractive. It’s best to weigh a horse’s chances against the available odds and each-way terms. If you think the odds underestimate a horse’s chances, you might have found a good bet.
Sorting Our Racecards
Our racecards default to showing horses in numerical order, with horse number 1 first. However, you can sort them in different ways to help identify a winning horse:
- Sort by Number: In handicap races, horse number 1 carries the top weight.
- Sort by Odds: This option places the favourites at the top.
- Sort by Racing Post Rating: The highest-rated horses (by RPR) appear first.
- Sort by Topspeed Rating: The fastest-rated horses are shown at the top.
Filtering Our Racecards
At HorseRacing.net, you can filter racecards using our “Stats Filter” to narrow down the field based on one or more of the following criteria:
- Course Winners only
- Distance Winners only
- Last Time Winners only
- Horses That Ran in the Last 30 Days only
