What is The Derby?
The Derby is a Group One race run at Epsom Downs in June and is the showpiece contest of the entire Flat season in the UK.First run in 1780, The Derby is now Britain's richest race and while it is open to colts and fillies, it's contested by colts mainly with the best three-year-old fillies lining up in The Oaks the day before at Epsom. The fourth Classic of the season, The Derby is the middle leg of the Triple Crown - where it is sandwiched between the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket and the St Leger at Doncaster - but The Derby is the race all owners, trainers and jockeys want to win, and it's one of the sporting highlights of the year. Throughout history there have been some legendary winners of The Derby with more recently the likes of Nijinksy (1970), Shergar (1981) and Galileo (2001) just three of the legendary Flat performers to have etched their name in the roll of honour.
What happened in the 2022 Derby?
Sir Michael Stoute's Desert Crown was a stunning winner of the 2022 Cazoo Derby, as the hot favourite scooted clear of the second placed Hoo Ya Mal, with Westover finishing best of the rest in third place.
