About the Scottish Grand National
The Scottish Grand National is a Grade Three handicap chase run over a trip of four miles at Ayr Racecourse each April.
In total, there are 27 fences to be jumped in one of the most prestigious contests of the entire season with huge prize money on the line. The race is the Scottish equivalent of the Aintree Grand National and although it may not hold the lofty position of its English cousin, it remains a key race on the calendar and a massive event in its own right.
Stamina and jumping are tested to the fullest in the Scottish National and only horses who can show both assets will have a chance of crossing the line first each spring. We will also see a number of the horses from this race head to Liverpool the following year for the Grand National itself which means it can be a lovely trial for the world's greatest steeplechase.
The history of the Scottish Grand National
The Scottish Grand National is one of the most famous and important races in the sport of national hunt racing with some legendary names on the roll of honour.
Early forms of the race can be traced back to 1858, before it was moved to Bogside Racecourse in 1867 where it remained for over one hundred years before the Irvine venue closed down in 1965.
The following year saw the famous race move to Ayr where it has remained ever since and become one of the most important races of the spring each April. On his march to the British Trainers' Championship, Willie Mullins won the 2024 renewal of the race with MACDERMOTT, the first Irish trained winner to scoop the prize since 1869.

How We Review Scottish Grand National Betting Sites
Before an operator can be added to our list of Scottish Grand National betting sites, it goes through our rigorous review process. Here are some of the factors we consider:
- Licensing – This is the first port of call with any review. If a site doesn’t hold an up-to-date licence from the UK Gambling Commission, we won’t recommend it. This licence offers a degree of protection to bettors due to requirements around fair play, security, and responsible gambling.
- Betting Markets – The best Grand National betting sites offer competitive odds on a fantastic range of markets, including on sports outside of horse racing.
- Site Design – Ease of use is an essential factor to consider, but we also love to see sites with attractive or unique presentation.
- Features – As part of our reviews, we’ll also look for handy additional features. Live streaming, live betting, early cash-out, and bet builders are just a few extra features that can elevate the overall experience.
- Bonuses – Many punters are looking for a competitive welcome bonus when they sign up, but we also love to see a range of ongoing promotions. As for Grand National betting sites, we check for offers like best odds guaranteed, faller insurance, acca insurance, extra places, and more.
- Payment Options – A great range of payment options lets punters manage their betting funds in a hassle-free way that suits them. Fast withdrawals are a priority for many of our readers too.
- Customer Support – We hope you’ll have a flawless experience at all of our Grand National betting sites. But in case you do run into any problems, robust customer support will get things sorted promptly.
- Mobile – With so many opting to bet from their phones and tablets, mobile compatibility is a must. At minimum, we want to see an optimised mobile site, but we give full marks to bookies with dedicated betting apps.
- Our Experience – All our expert reviews and recommendations are underpinned by our own first-hand experience of the site. We sign up, claim the welcome bonus, and make bets at the site so we can give you accurate and honest insight into what you can expect from our recommended Grand National betting sites.
Scottish Grand National Betting Payment Options
To bet on the Scottish Grand National, you’ll need some funds in your bookmaker account. There are plenty of ways to get that done — here are some top payment options you’ll find at Scottish Grand National betting sites.
Visa
Debit cards remain one of the most popular methods for betting site deposits and withdrawals, thanks to their ubiquity and familiarity. Visa and Mastercard are largely similar in their offerings, but Visa may offer faster payouts at some bookies thanks to its Fast Funds service. Debit cards are always eligible when claiming Grand National betting bonuses.
Trustly
Payments intermediary Trustly runs on Open Banking, directly integrating with your bank account to provide fast transactions at Grand National betting sites. There’s no need to sign up — just log into the secure portal with your usual online banking credentials. Trustly is usually eligible when claiming Grand National free bets too.
Paysafecard
If you’d rather not share your bank details with the bookmaker, Paysafecard is a great option. This prepaid card can be purchased at thousands of participating retailers around the country in amounts from £10 to £100. Then, use the printed 16-digit code to transfer the value to your bookmaker wallet. The main drawback to Paysafecard is it doesn’t allow withdrawals, so you’ll have to pair it with another payment method to cash out.
PayPal
PayPal is a leading e-wallet service that makes it easy to manage your betting funds in one place. Once you’ve signed up for a free account, you’ll be able to store your different payment cards within PayPal, instead using just your email and password to make deposits and withdrawals at Grand National betting sites. As your bank details are kept hidden, it’s highly secure. PayPal also supports fast withdrawals, although using it to deposit may disqualify you from receiving a Grand National betting bonus.
