About the Scottish Grand National
The Scottish Grand National is a Grade Three handicap chase run over a trip of four miles at Ayr Racecourse each April.
In total, there are 27 fences to be jumped in one of the most prestigious contests of the entire season with huge prize money on the line. The race is the Scottish equivalent of the Aintree Grand National and although it may not hold the lofty position of its English cousin, it remains a key race on the calendar and a massive event in its own right.
Stamina and jumping are tested to the fullest in the Scottish National and only horses who can show both assets will have a chance of crossing the line first each spring. We will also see a number of the horses from this race head to Liverpool the following year for the Grand National itself which means it can be a lovely trial for the world's greatest steeplechase.
The history of the Scottish Grand National
The Scottish Grand National is one of the most famous and important races in the sport of national hunt racing with some legendary names on the roll of honour.
Early forms of the race can be traced back to 1858, before it was moved to Bogside Racecourse in 1867 where it remained for over one hundred years before the Irvine venue closed down in 1965.
The following year saw the famous race move to Ayr where it has remained ever since and become one of the most important races of the spring each April. On his march to the British Trainers' Championship, Willie Mullins won the 2025 renewal of the race with CAPTAIN CODY, retaining the title after Macdermott became the first Irish trained winner to scoop the prize since 1869 the year before. Sadly, the 2024 winner suffered a fatal fall in the 2025 race.
