What is the Scottish Grand National?

The Scottish Grand National is a Grade Three handicap chase run over a trip of four miles at Ayr Racecourse each April.

In total, there are 27 fences to be jumped in one of the most prestigious contests of the entire season with huge prize money on the line. The race is the Scottish equivalent of the Aintree Grand National and although it may not hold the lofty position of its English cousin, it remains a key race on the calendar and a massive event in its own right.

Stamina and jumping is tested to the fullest in the Scottish National and only horses who can show both assets will have a chance of crossing the line first each spring. We will also see a number of the horses from this race head to Liverpool the following year for the Grand National itself which means it can be a lovely trial for the world's greatest steeplechase.

What happened in the 2021 Scottish Grand National?

Lucinda Russell's Mighty Thunder stormed home to get the better of Dingo Dollar in a thrilling finish to the 2021 Scottish Grand National, while Mister Fogpatches (third) and The Ferry Master (fourth) completed the placings.

The history of the Scottish Grand National

The Scottish Grand National is one of the most famous and important races in the sport of national hunt racing with some legendary names on the roll of honour.

Early forms of the race can be traced back to 1858, before it was moved to Bogside Racecourse in 1867 where it remained for over one hundred years before the Irvnce venue closed down in 1965.

The following year saw the famous race move to Ayr where it has remained ever since and become one of the most important races of the spring each April.

Who is the most iconic winner of the Scottish Grand National?

There is a stellar list of legendary horses to have won the Scottish Grand National including Queen's Taste, Little Polveir and Earth Summit but none can match the great Red Rum.

"Rummy" made his name down south winning the Aintree version three times but he managed to also win the Scottish Grand National in stunning circumstances in 1974. The Ginger McCain trained horse managed to win in Liverpool and Ayr in the same season which is a feat beyond parallel in terms of weight carrying performances and ensures the great horse is clearly out on his own in the list of Ayr heroes.

Are there any trials for the Scottish Grand National?

Punters are well advised to keep an eye on the key staying handicap chase races through the second half of the season with the majority of the horses at the upper end of the handicap being aimed at one of the big end of season races. It is rare for horses to have run at Aintree to also go to Scotland these days but it can happen if a horse falls early in the English version. The Ultima Handicap Chase at the Cheltenham Festival could also be one possible route for Scottish Grand National routes as trainers look to get a run into their potential horses for the big one in Scotland.

Who is the most successful jockey in the Scottish Grand National?

Charlie Cunningham won't be a name familiar to many of our readers but he is top of the tree when it comes to the most wins in the Scottish Grand National. Cunningham won the race on Bellman (1881), Wild Meadow (1885), Orcadian (1887) and Deloraine (1889( during his career in the 19th century.

Who is the most successful trainer in the Scottish Grand National?

Neville Crump and Ken Oliver are the two trainers with the most Scottish National wins with both picking up five wins during their careers. Crump scored in 1949, 1959, 1968, 1980 and 1983, while Oliver won in 1963, 1970, 1971, 1979 and 1982.
