Major Races & Events Jockeys
Cheltenham Festival isn’t the only prestigious event we cover. HorseRacing.net is passionately committed to offering comprehensive jockey information and coverage during major races and festivals. Some of the most significant include:
Grand National
Held at Aintree Racecourse every April, the Grand National is renowned for being the longest and most physically demanding race in the UK and Irish calendar. Horses compete in a handicap steeplechase over four miles and two-and-a-half furlongs.
The course also features 30 fences that are much larger than traditional National Hunt obstacles. George Stevens is the most successful jockey in the Grand National’s 184-year history, riding a winner on four different occasions.
Epsom Derby
The Epsom Derby is The Derby Festival’s showpiece event at the legendary Epsom Downs Racecourse. Held on the first Saturday of June every year since 1780, the Group 1 flat race is open to three-year-old colts and fillies.
As the most distinguished British Classic and richest flat race in the UK, the Epsom Derby is particularly popular among jockeys aiming to establish themselves in riding folklore. Steve Donoghue is the most successful jockey, winning the Derby six times in the early 20th century.
Royal Ascot
Royal Ascot is a British cultural institution renowned for its elegant dress code and close connection with the Royal Family. The five-day festival has been running in some shape or form since 1768, making it one of the oldest meets still contested today.
Horses run in several races each afternoon, although the Queen’s Vase, Royal Hunt Cup, and Gold Cup are the most prestigious. Lester Piggott is the most successful jockey by a country mile, riding 116 winners at Royal Ascot during his star-studded career. This included an unprecedented 11 Gold Cup victories.
Glorious Goodwood
Glorious Goodwood is held at Goodwood Racecourse in West Sussex every July and August. The challenging racecourse rewards skilled jockeys that can navigate its unique configuration featuring a tight loop and several unusual undulations.
Punters enjoy three significant Group I flat races during the five-day Glorious Goodwood festival: the Goodwood Cup, Nassau Stakes, and Sussex Stakes. Frankie Dettori is one of the most successful jockeys, winning the Goodwood Cup on five occasions since 1999.
Epsom Oaks
The Epsom Oaks is the second-oldest British Classic and the third of the season. The Group I flat race is held at Epsom Downs during the Epsom Derby Festival and is only open to three-year-old fillies.
Frank Buckle is the leading Epsom Oaks jockey with a remarkable nine wins between 1797 and 1823. In more recent times, Frankie Dettori takes the award with seven victories since 1994.
