About the Sussex Stakes
The Sussex Stakes is a Group 1 race contested over one mile. It takes place during Glorious Goodwood, a five-day festival held every year at Goodwood Racecourse near Chichester.
Attracting the premier milers from across the UK, Ireland, and Europe, the Sussex Stakes is one of the most valuable Flat races on the calendar, and you can often see horses compete in the race that have run at Royal Ascot earlier in the season. Open to horses aged three years or older, the Sussex Stakes continues to be one of the showpiece events of Glorious Goodwood, and its history is littered with magnificent winners.
First held in 1841, the Sussex Stakes has been won by plenty of superstars — Brigadier Gerard claimed victory in the 1971 renewal, while Rock Of Gibraltar was a fine winner of the 2002 running. However, one horse that lights up the roll of honour is the mighty Frankel, who built on a win in the St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot in 2011 to land the Sussex Stakes that same year. Come the 2012 instalment, the Sir Henry Cecil-trained legend retained his crown in fine style to continue his dominance in the mile division.
Aidan O'Brien's Paddington was a classy winner of the 2023 Sussex Stakes, as the 4/9 favourite beat Facteur Cheval impressively.
Sussex Stakes Trends
Looking at past trends can be a useful way to make a pick for the Sussex Stakes. So, what do the numbers say?
It’s certainly not a bad idea to follow the odds — 7 of the previous 12 winners were favourites to win, while 11 of 12 were in the top three.
Age is another factor to consider. Of the past 12 winners, half were aged 3, while the rest were aged 4 or older. Experience seems to play a role too, with 8/12 winners picking up at least one Group I win in the past and at least two previous wins over 8 furlongs.
Royal Ascot is a solid proving ground for horses in the lead-up to Glorious Goodwood. A number of horses that ran in the Queen Anne Stakes and St James’s Palace Stakes went on to win the Sussex Stakes.
Sussex Stakes Tips
As is usually the case the Sussex Stakes looks set to be an epic 'Duel On The Downs' with 2000 Guineas winner NOTABLE SPEECH out for vengeance against Royal Ascot conqueror and Irish 2000 Guineas winner Rosallion. The latter is the odds-on favourite, but we think Charlie Appleby's colt can make the score 2-1 and upset the odds.
