What is the Betfair Chase?
The Betfair Chase is a Grade One race run over a trip of three miles and one furlong at Haydock Park each November and is open to horses aged five and over.
The Betfair Chase is the first leg of the national hunt triple crown with any horse that wins the Haydock contest, the King George and the Gold Cup in the same season picking up a cool £1million dollars. The race is a big one its own right but does also act as a key stepping stone for the Cheltenham Gold Cup itself with the winner of the race likely to jump right towards the head of the ante-post betting for the big race at the Cheltenham Festival in the spring.

The history of the Betfair Chase
The Betfair Chase only has a short history, having first been run in 2005, but already it is a vital stop on the road to Cheltenham as we get to see some of the best staying chasers in the country clash at Haydock Park.
Registered as the Lancashire Chase, the race was originally run over three miles but was extended slightly to allow the runners have a longer run towards the first bend. The race is often ued as the perfect prep for horses contesting the King George VI Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day with the race in Lancashire coming a month before the Christmas spectacular.
The jockey Club £1million bonus has added an extra angle to the Betfair Chase having been re-introduced in 2015 meaning that any connections with half an eye on the money will of course enter their horse for Haydock.

Having said that, the Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby can be used as a prep for Haydock for trainers looking to get a run into their staying chasers with Ballyoprtic one example of a horse winning in Yorkshire before heading across the Pennines to Lancashire. Punters are well advised to look back at the race from the year before with multiple winners of the race common place with Cue Card, Bristol De Mai and Silviniaco Conti just three recent examples.
