Grand National Tipping Criteria - Help To Find The Winner
Age
Experienced horses are often the best ones to follow, but Noble Yeats did become the first horse since 1940 to win the Grand National aged seven when winning in 2022. Since 1990 only one 12-year-old (Amberleigh House - 2004) has won the Grand National, so it's wise to look towards horses aged 8, 9, 10 or 11 years old.
Weight
Since 2000, only six horses have carried more than 11st to victory in the Grand National, so those down the weights are more appealing for your Grand National tips.
Form
Ideally you would look for horses that have previous experience jumping Aintree's unique Grand National fences, but arguably more important is looking for those horses with form over extreme distances. With the Grand National being over four miles and with 30 fences to contend with, you should look towards horses that have decent form over 3m+.
UK or Ireland
Attracting some of the leading staying handicap chasers from the UK & Ireland, the Grand National is a global event and since the year 2000 there have been seven horses to win the Aintree showpiece trained in Ireland.
Starting Price
With 34 runners set to line up, the Grand National Odds are wide open and Mon Mome in 2009 (100/1) and Noble Yeats in 2022 (50/1) show that big-priced runners can land the coveted prize. Four favourites or joint-favourites have won the Grand National since 2000 with Tiger Roll in 2019 being the shortest priced winner.
Grand National Key Trends
- One of the last 10 winners have been favourite
- Five of the last 10 winners were trained in the UK, the other five were trained in Ireland
- Seven of the last 10 winners were aged nine or below
- Only three of the last 10 winners have carried 11st 5lbs or more to victory
- Six of the last 10 winners have been priced 25/1 or bigger
