Today’s Goodwood Odds and Tips
Goodwood racecourse hosts Flat racing, and you can check out the latest information on races, odds, results and tips here...
Goodwood Major Races
The racecourse is located near Chichester is of the most popular racecourses in England. It is a right handed flat racing track that is six furlongs in which a a triangular loop is connected by two bends.
In races over 7 furlongs and 1 mile high numbers are favoured in the stall advantage and a high number is almost a necessity in the Stewards' Cup. However, low numbers are favoured for sprints here.
It was at this course that on Lizzy Hare back in June 1987 that jockey Frankie Dettori rode his first ever British winner.
Big Races Run At Goodwood And Glorious Goodwood
Goodwood betting covers some of the UK season’s most distinguished and highly anticipated flat racing events. Some of our favourites include:
Sussex Stakes
A Group I flat race for horses three years and over, the Sussex Stakes has been running in late July or early August since 1841. Frankel is the only horse to have won twice, beating the competition in 2011 and 2012. The Sussex Stakes is arguably the most anticipated race at Glorious Goodwood 2023 and beyond. Its challenging one-mile course with twists, turns, and sharp inclines ensures maximum excitement and world-class racing.
Vintage Stakes
The Vintage Stakes is a Group II flat racing event featuring two-year-old horses gearing up for the British Classics. Ran over seven furlongs, it’s widely regarded as one of the leading races for younger horses. Several have gone on to win a British Classic the year after competing, with Troy being the first in 1978. The Irish-bred stallion won at the Epsom Derby, triggering a wave of successful Vintage Stakes winners over the past few decades.
Lennox Stakes
The Lennox Stakes is another celebrated Glorious Goodwood betting opportunity. Open to two-year-old horses, the Group II flat racing event takes place during the festival in late July or early August over seven furlongs. The Lennox Stakes has been a highlight of the opening day in recent years and has proved a vital testing ground for two-year-old colts and fillies looking forward to Group I races during the following season. For example, Observatory won the first edition in 2000 and took the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Royal Ascot the year after.
Goodwood Cup
A historic Goodwood horse racing event first ran in 1812, the Goodwood Cup is a two-mile flat race featuring many of the world’s best stayers over three years old. Sandwiched between the Gold Cup and Doncaster Cup in the Stayers’ Triple Crown. Stradivarius won a clean sweep in 2019 and holds the record for most Goodwood Cup wins with four consecutive victories from 2017 and 2020.
Molecomb Stakes
First run in 1829, the Molecomb Stakes is a Group III race on Glorious Goodwood’s second day. Two-year-old colts and fillies compete over five furlongs, with several famous horses using it as a springboard to win group races the following season. For example, the 1800s racemare Crucifix won the Molecomb Stakes in 1839 before taking 1840’s 1000 Guineas, 2000 Guineas, and Epsom Oaks and retiring undefeated.
Nassau Stakes
The Nassau Stakes is open to three-year-old and older fillies and mares. An essential Glorious Goodwood betting opportunity currently on the third day, the one-mile and one-furlong race was established in 1840. The Nassau Stakes was promoted to a Group I race in 1999 and has since delivered numerous eminent winners. Midday is arguably the most notable, picking up a hat-trick of victories between 2009 and 2011.
King George Stakes
Created to commemorate King George V’s coronation in 1911, the King George Stakes takes place over five furlongs. Not to be confused with Royal Ascot’s King George V Stakes, the race pits three-year-old and over horses against each other on Goodwood Racecourse’s signature twists and turns. The King George Stakes is an important trial for the Nunthorpe Stakes in York later in the season.
Stewards’ Cup
The Stewards’ Cup is one of the only Goodwood horse racing handicap events during the season. Ran by horses aged three years and up, the race often poses a headache for Glorious Goodwood betting enthusiasts, featuring successful, experienced horses alongside younger contestants keen to prove themselves. The Stewards’ Cup generally involves over 25 runners, making it one of the most exciting and difficult to win races during the festival and season overall.
Celebration Mile
An important trial for the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Royal Ascot, Goodwood Racecourse’s Celebration Mile traditionally takes place towards the end of August. The one-mile Group II race is open to three-year-old horses or older and has had several noteworthy winners since its inaugural 1967 edition. Poet’s Voice is one of the most famous, who won the Celebration Mile and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes in 2010, ridden by Frankie Dettori.

Payment Options For Goodwood Betting
Finding the optimum banking method is key to enjoying Goodwood betting to its fullest. Punters have several options to choose from at the best bookmakers, from e-wallets to forward-thinking Open Banking methods. Deciding on the top option for your preferences is straightforward once you know the fundamentals. We’ve examined some of the most popular choices for Goodwood horse racing betting below:
Debit Cards
Debit cards are the most conventional ways for punters to fund their betting accounts. If you’ve ever bought a product or service online using your debit card, you’ll already know how it works. One of the main benefits of using debit cards is the familiarity and powerful banking security features, although it does require more sensitive data sharing than other methods. Nevertheless, with instant deposits and rapid withdrawals, it’s many bettors’ favourite option for Goodwood betting.
E-Wallets
E-wallets like PayPal, Skrill and Neteller are increasingly popular at UK betting sites. All reputable providers feature watertight SSL encryption, two-factor authentication and other safety features to further enhance the security aspect. PayPal, Skrill, and other e-wallets offer some of the fastest withdrawals possible but be aware that deposit bonuses at many Goodwood betting platforms won’t include these payment methods.
Paysafecard
Paysafecard is a prepaid payment solution providing a particularly advantageous service for Goodwood horse racing and other sports bettors. Punters must purchase a real-life or virtual voucher and use the PIN code to deposit a predetermined quantity of cash up to £1,000. This cuts out any sensitive data sharing, usernames, or passwords, making it a very private and anonymous banking method. The only drawback is the difficulty of making withdrawals, which are rarely available, and only with a My Paysafecard account.
Trustly
Using Trustly unlocks various unique benefits. The Open Banking payment provider acts as an intermediary between your bank account and bookies, allowing you to make direct payments and withdrawals without inputting a card or account number. Instead, punters simply need to log into their online banking via the Trustly portal. Advantages include transaction speed, safety, and convenience. However, Trustly still isn’t as widely available as many other banking options.
History Of Goodwood Racecourse
Goodwood Racecourse was built in the picturesque West Sussex countryside during the late 1700s and held its first public meeting in 1802. A distinguished venue on the UK flat racing circuit, the course is notable for its more unusual layout featuring loops, tight turns, and narrow straights.
Goodwood Racecourse quickly grew in popularity during the 19th century, with the Glorious Goodwood meet becoming a highlight on many horse racing enthusiast’s calendars, including King Edward VII who scarcely missed a year. Many celebrated races like the Sussex Stakes, Goodwood Cup, and Molecomb Stakes were established during this time, further boosting the course’s popularity.
There have been numerous memorable performances and legendary horses over the past two centuries. In the 1800s, the Hungarian Kinscem arguably takes top spot, winning the Goodwood Cup and boasting a terrific 54-race unbeaten record. More recently, Stradivarius won four trophies in consecutive years from 2017 to 2020.
How To Bet On Goodwood Races
Follow the steps below to enjoy Goodwood betting:
Responsible Gambling
Enjoying Goodwood betting responsibly is fundamental. Without doing so, you could easily put yourself and others at risk. Here are a few useful tactics to consider:
Set Budgets
Punters must set strict budgets before betting and stick to them. Never place wagers without separating funds first, as this makes it far easier to overspend.
Self-Exclusion
All leading bookmakers offer a self-exclusion tool you can use to lock your account for a specified time if you’re struggling to take a break.
Set Account Limits
Account limits restrict the amount you can deposit over a certain period of time allowing spending to remain in check.
Don’t Aim to Make Money
Betting should be about enjoyment and never about making money. Getting too focused on winnings can lead to an unhealthy relationship with betting, especially if you start chasing your losses.
