About Cheltenham Festival Day 1
The curtain-raiser of the Cheltenham Festival is the Supreme Novices' Hurdle, the beginning of this two-mile Grade 1 contest always draws a huge cheer from the crowd - known as the "Cheltenham roar". The Nicky Henderson-trained Old Park Star is the current favourite having won the Supreme Trial at Haydock in January.
Second up is the Arkle, a Grade 1 novice chase over two miles. The winner of the Arkle regularly makes up into a key contender for the Queen Mother Champion Chase the following year. Nicky Henderson has the favourite here too with Lulamba enhancing his credentials with a win in the Game Spirit Chase at Newbury.
Third on the card is the Fred Winter - a race for four-year-old hurdlers and that is followed by the Ultima Handicap Chase, a fiercely competitive handicap chase, run over three miles and a furlong.
Next up is the Champion Hurdle, the first of the 'Championship' races during the week. The New Lion and Brighterdaysahead are disputing favouritism at the moment but could Constitution Hill produce a dramatic comeback to win the race for a second time.
The Plate and the National Hunt Chase round off the first day's action.
