About The Fred Winter Juvenile Handicap Hurdle
The Fred Winter Juvenile Handicap Hurdle is a Grade 3 handicap hurdle race, held on the first day of the Cheltenham Festival, Ladies Day, which traditionally takes place on a Tuesday in March. The race is run over two miles and 87 yards, and like the Triumph Hurdle is exclusively for four-year-olds. Although it is traditionally viewed as being second-best behind the Triumph, the Fred Winter has produced some smart performers in its own right since its conception, including the 2016 winner Diego Du Charmil, who has gone on to become a Grade 1-winning chaser.
The Fred Winter Juvenile Handicap Hurdle was introduced in 2005 as part of the extension of the festival from three days to four. It is named after Fred Winter, who was a legendary figure in National Hunt racing, and the inaugural running was won by the Paul Nolan-trained Dabiroun. The race began life as a listed handicap, but was upgraded to Grade 3 status in 2009. It’s built up a reputation as one of the most difficult betting heats of the entire festival, something shown by the fact that the winner has returned home at a price of 33/1 or higher on five occasions since its inception.
Joseph O'Brien and JP McManus scooped the race for the second consecutive year in 2025 with PUTURHANDSTOGETHER, an emphatic winner in the green and gold.
Fred Winter Juvenile Handicap Hurdle Tips
Early Cheltenham tips focus on how the race is shaping up rather than firm selections, with clearer betting opportunities emerging closer to the Festival. The Fred Winter Handicap Hurdle picture for 2026 remains deliberately unclear at this stage, which is typical for a race that often attracts late-developing juveniles and cross-code types. The market tends to stay wide until the weights are released in late February, as that is when it becomes easier to assess which four-year-olds have been aimed here rather than the Triumph. From there, final declarations usually play a major role in sharpening the picture, with several runners often taken out once alternative targets are confirmed. Jockey bookings can also be revealing in this race, particularly when conditional riders are kept to one horse, while the ground on the day often has a big say in how competitive the contest becomes. Until those pieces fall into place, the Fred Winter remains one of the hardest Festival handicaps to pin down early.

Who is the most iconic winner of the Fred Winter Juvenile Handicap Hurdle?
The Fred Winter is still very much in its infancy having started life in just 2005, though the 2016 winner Diego Du Charmil proved to be a particularly talented alumnus of the race. He didn’t take long to endear himself to punters, either, landing a gamble when winning this race on British debut for the Paul Nicholls yard in 2016, before landing another minor touch when winning the Scottish County Hurdle at Musselburgh in February 2017. Diego Du Charmil was switched to fences the following season and although he missed the 2018 Cheltenham Festival in favour of other targets, he proved his talents nonetheless, winning the Grade 1 Maghull Novices’ Chase at Aintree in 2018. The shrewdly-campaigned Diego Du Charmil has held illustrious company since, and chased home the great Altior in each of his last three renewals - picking up a large chunk of place prize money in the process.
