About the Topham Handicap Chase
The Topham Handicap Chase is a Grade 3 handicap run over two miles and five furlongs, and takes place at Aintree during the Grand National meeting in April. Open to horses aged five years and older, the contest takes place over the Grand National course with the unique fences being jumped during the race, and it can sometimes throw up a future Grand National contender.
First run in 1949, the Topham can often work as a trial for the following year's Grand National as runners look to gain experiences over the National fences, but while many have tried to land the Topham/Grand National double several have failed. A hugely popular betting race, it also gives the chance for the jockeys to have a spin around the Grand National track before the big race the following day.
ARIZONA CARDINAL took the race in 2024 for Stuart Edmonds and Ciaran Gethings, seeing off the well fancied Willie Mullins hot pot James Du Berlais.
