About the King Edward VII Stakes
The King Edward VII Stakes is a Group Two race for three-year-old colts and geldings run on day four of Royal Ascot.
First run in 1834, the King Edward VII Stakes is a race that is targeted by some of the premier middle-distance horses in the UK & Ireland and being only two weeks after the Derby then you can occasionally see horses that competed in the Classic aim to bounce back to form. For those horses that may not handle the unique test that is the Derby could well be kept back for this contest, so it can often throw up a smart winner.
Roger Varian's King Of Steel was a dominant winner of the King Edward VII Stakes as he landed the 2023 prize for favourite backers.
King Edward VII Stakes Key Trends
- Four of the last 12 winners had their previous run in the Derby, but none won the Classic
- 9 of the last 12 winners had a rating of 103 or higher
- All 12 of the last 12 winners had at least 1 flat win in their career.
King Edward VII Stakes Tips
Diego Velazquez was highly regarded as a two year old and could bounce back here in calmer waters for team Ballydoyle, but SPACE LEGEND looks a bit of a star in the making for William Haggas.
The way he powered home when finally getting a gap at Goodwood stood out to me and while it will have been disappointing for those who backed him that day to lose out on the 15/8 favourite, it is hopefully aiding his price here.
