About the St James's Palace Stakes
The St James's Palace Stakes is a Group One race run on the opening day of Royal Ascot, and is open to three-year-old colts.
Contested on the Tuesday of Royal Ascot, the St James's Palace Stakes can attract the Classic generation that have competed in the English, Irish or French 2000 Guineas earlier in the season, and it can often be a race that determine who is the best three-year-old miler. First run in 1834, the St James's Palace Stakes has grown in stature down the years and has been won by some of Flat racing's biggest names including Giant's Causeway (2000), Rock Of Gibraltar (2002) and Frankel (2011) in recent times.
In a clash between English, French and Irish 2000 Guineas winners, in the end it was the Irish winner FIELD OF GOLD who ran out a decisive winner, marking himself out as the top miler of his generation despite failing at Newmarket much like his sire Kingman.
