What is the Ayr Gold Cup? 

The Ayr Gold Cup is a flat handicap race run over a trip of 6f at the brilliant Ayr racecourse in Scotland. The race is open to horses aged three and above and takes place in September each season.

The race has grown into one of the key events under any code in Scotland but was originally held at Belleisle, which was also in Ayr. The fixture was relocated to the current venue when Belleisle closed in 1907 and has remained ever since at the popular venue.

The draw and handicap marks are the key for punters to study when it comes to the Ayr Gold Cup betting with the weights likely to make the difference. The race is open to 27 runners with those horses not making the cut getting a chance to run in one of the consolation races, the Ayr Silver Cup or the Ayr Bronze Cup.

The Ayr Gold Cup has a long and impressive history, with the event first established all the way back in 1804 when the race was open to only horses trained and bred in Scotland.

There have been some memorable moments in the race over the past century or so with Marmaduke Jinks famously carrying just 6-13 (6 stone, 13 lb) to victory back in 1936. At the other end of the spectrum was Roman Warrior, who lumped 10-00 to glory in 1975 for Nigel Angus in fantastic style.

There was a magic moment in 2018 when we had a dead heat between Son Of Rest and Baron Bolt, with the judge unable to separate the pair  in the photo as they crossed the line.

Who is the most iconic winner of the Ayr Gold Cup? 

A number of excellent horses have won the Ayr Gold Cup without there being an obvious stand out name in terms of quality.

Hard To Figure won in 1993 for Ron Hodges and remains the last horse older than six to win the race, while Brando was a high quality winner of the race off 9-10 for Kevin Ryan back in 2016.

You have to go back to the 19th century to find a three-time winner of the Ayr showpiece with Dazzle claiming the win in successive years between 1889 and 1891 which was a fantastic achievement.

Are there any trials for the Ayr Gold Cup? 

Horses being aimed at the Ayr Gold Cup will emerge through the season, with improving handicappers with plenty of speed likely to be ones that come into consideration for this race.

The Symphony Group Handicap at York during the Ebor meeting is one potential race to keep an eye on with half an eye on Ayr, while the same comments also apply to the Shergar Cup Sprint At Ascot, which may well provide us with a runner or two north or the border in September.

Two jockeys have four wins in the race, with both Tom Nicholson and William Noble picking up the prize four times in the 19th century. Nicholson won the race on Dominie Skelp (1827), Brunswick (1830), Gondolier (1831) and Masetto (1834), with Noble doing likewise on Despot (1836), The Doctor (1840), The Recorder (1842) and The Shadow (1843).

Who is the most successful trainer in the Ayr Gold Cup? 

Tom Dawson farmed the Ayr Gold Cup during his training career with no less than 15 winners to his name between 1835 and 1869. Dawson saddled Inheritor (1835, 1838), Despot (1836, 1837), The Doctor (1840), Doctor Caius (1841), The Recorder (1842), The Shadow (1843, 1844), Inheritress (1845, 1846), Stilton (1852), Itch (1854), Tabouret (1868) and Good Hope (1869) to victory.
