Cartmel is a small racecourse in the picturesque village of Cartmel set in wooded parkland in Cumbria. The course is a left handed oval and it measures just over one mile and one furlong and it boasts a four furlong run in, making it the longest in England.
The racecourse although small regularly attracts crowds in excess of 20,000 although it holds just seven National Hunt races per year
The racecourse was the location for the infamous “Gay Future” incident in 1974 that involved an Irish betting syndicate that switched horses before a race and relied on poor communication at the site. The incident was made into a movie called Murphy’s Stroke that starred future James Bond, Pierce Bronson.
Jockey Graham Lee does fairly well at this course along with Brian Hughes, as does trainer Donald McCain Jnr who is the son of Ginger McCain. who famously trained Red Rum.
