Challow Novices' Hurdle Tips

The Challow Novices' Hurdle is the final Grade 1 race of the year and it's sure to have some potential horses that could line up in the Cheltenham Festival later in the season. We will have our Challow Novices' Hurdle tip for the 2020 race available here in the days leading up to the Newbury contest.

What is the Challow Novices' Hurdle?

The Challow Novice Hurdle is a Grade One contest run over a trip of two miles and four furlongs at Newbury racecourse at the end of December or the start of January.

The Challow is one of the key races of the season for the best novice hurdlers over the intermediate trip with the horses in this race often destined for bigger and better things.

There are ten hurdles to be jumped in the Challow with the race one of the feature contests on a terrific card at the Berkshire venue and we can no doubt expect some classy animals to take their chance this season.

What happened in the 2019 Challow Novices' Hurdle?

A small, but select field of five lined up for the 2019 Challow Novices' Hurdle, and it was the Philip Hobbs-trained Thyme Hill that was sent off favourite and he duly landed the prize for favourite backers, but he was made to work for his first Grade 1 win.

The Cashel Man set a decent gallop from the outset and he proved to be a thorn in the side of Thyme Hill for most of the contest, but the Paul Nicholls-trained contender was just outclassed by Hobbs' charge.

Hanging left late on, Thyme Hill showed tremendous battling qualities to eventually beat The Cashel Man by one-and-a-half lengths and propel into the Cheltenham Festival picture.

The history of the Challow Novices Hurdle

First run in 1971, the Challow was initially run as a juvenile hurdle  before being opened up to older horses during the 1981/82 season.

The race generally tends to be run at the end of December but is on occasion run on the first weekend of the following January which can mean that two editions of the race can be run in the same calendar year.

The race is a traditional breeding ground for the starts of the future with the horses who perform well at Newbury often heading to the Cheltenham Festival for the Ballymore Novices' Hurdle of the Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle.

Who is the most iconic winner of the Challow Novices' Hurdle?

The Challow has proven to be an increasingly important race over the past decade or so with horses like Bindaree, Taquin du Seuil and Diamond Harry all claiming the victory. There is no doubt which horses is the best though when it comes to the roll of honour with the legendary Denman claiming the victory in 2006. "The Tank" would go on to win the Ladbrokes Trophy twice off top weight, the RSA Chase and the Cheltenham Gold Cup but it was in the Challow where we first saw just how good the Paul Nicholls trained horse would become.

Are there any trials for the Challow Novices' Hurdle?

The Challow Novices' Hurdle tends to bring some of the best young hurdlers together at the end of the year and there are one or two races to follow before Newbury to get an idea of potential runners. There is a Grade Two Ballymore contest at Cheltenham during the November meeting which could be seen as a prep for Newbury, while Champ used a handicap contest at the beginning of December as a final start before stepping up to Grade One company at end of the month.
