About the Mares' Hurdle
The Mares’ Hurdle is a Grade 1 contest over hurdles for mares only, which is traditionally held on the first day of the Cheltenham Festival, Champion Tuesday. Established in 2008, the race is one of the newest at the festival, and is run over just shy of two and a half miles (two miles, three furlongs and 200 yards).
Established in 2008, the David Nicholson Mares’ Hurdle is one of the youngest at the festival, with the inaugural running won by Whiteoak for the Donald McCain team. A period of domination began the year after when Quevega picked up the first of a staggering six straight wins for Willie Mullins. Since then the race has become a lot more competitive.
LOSSIEMOUTH for Mullins, Ricci and Townend was one of the most impressive winners of the 2024 Festival when cruising to Mares' glory on the Tuesday. If she returns for this race in 2025 she will be a short price, but hopefully we see her go for glory in the Champion Hurdle..
Latest Betting
Despite connections intimating they will send her for the Champion Hurdle, Lossiemouth is still the favourite for the 2025 Mares' Hurdle and she would have an excellent chance of going back to back. Brighterdaysahead finished second to Golden Ace in the Mares' Novices' Hurdle of 2024 yet is a shorter price than the winner for 2025 glory, while Kargese ran well in the Triumph and if training on next season can make her presence felt in this division.
