About the Mares' Novices' Hurdle
The Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle is a Grade 2 hurdle race over two miles and 179 yards, which is exclusively for female novice hurdles aged four and up, and traditionally takes place on the third day of the Cheltenham Festival, St Patrick’s Day, which is held on a Thursday in March. The race is the most recent addition to the Cheltenham Festival, having been introduced in 2016 to take the total number of races at the festival to 28.
As mentioned above, the Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle was introduced to the festival in 2016, meaning that the race is still very much in its infancy. Willie Mullins has dominated the race so far, winning all four renewals to date, with Ruby Walsh taking the ride on Limini in 2016 and Let’s Dance in 2017. Laurina has since struck in 2018 for Mullins and Paul Townend, while Noel Fehily was on board Eglantine Du Seuil in 2019. The race is building up something of a reputation as a coupon-enhancer, considering that the favourite has obliged in three of the four renewals to date - though the Nicky Henderson-trained Epatante let down favourite backers in the most recent renewal, only finishing ninth despite being sent off as a 15/8 favourite.
The 2025 race looked set to be heading to favourite Sixandahalf until an inspired Rachael Blackmore ride brought ART OF ENTITLEMENT through to win at a big price on what would prove to be an excellent day for the rider and trainer Henry De Bromhead.

Who is the most iconic winner of the Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle?
We only have four winners of the race to choose from in this regard, though Limini and Laurina have both proven to be talented mares later in their careers. Both have since taken on the boys in races, and Laurina has arguably been more successful of the two, building on a succession of wins against her own sex to finish fourth in the 2019 Champion Hurdle - when sent off a well-supported 5/2 second favourite. Laurina will be a seven-year-old at the 2020 Cheltenham Festival, and it will be interesting to see where Willie Mullins decides to campaign her.
Are there any trials for the Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle?
With the Mares' Novices' Hurdle still being a relatively new race, the winner of the race can come from many different avenues, meaning it is worth keeping an eye on mares’ novice contests in both Britain and Ireland for any eye-catchers. Rather interestingly, both Limini and Laurina won the Solerina Mares’ Novice Hurdle at Fairyhouse on their way to winning this contest while Let’s Dance and Eglantine Du Seuil both contested graded races in Ireland prior to running at the Festival.
