About the Triumph Hurdle
The Triumph Hurdle is the opening race on the final day of the Cheltenham Festival, Gold Cup Day, which is traditionally held on a Friday in March. A Grade 1 juvenile novice contest over hurdles, the race is run over two miles and 79 yards, and is for four-year-olds only.
The Triumph Hurdle was established in 1939, though was originally run at the now-closed Hurst Park and only became part of the Cheltenham Festival in 1968. The race has an esteemed roll of honour, one which includes the dual-Grand National winner Tiger Roll, who won the race in 2014. Four winners of the Triumph Hurdle have gone on to win the Champion Hurdle later in their careers, Clair Soleil, Persian War, Kribensis and Katchit. The race is currently sponsored by JCB, who began backing it in 2002.
PONIROS was the biggest shock winner of the race in history, the Mullins debutant just denying Lullamba the favourite in a thrilling finish which brought a hushed silence over the course and kicked off Gold Cup day in perfect fashion for the bookies.
Triumph Hurdle Tips
Early Cheltenham tips focus on how the race is shaping up rather than firm selections, with clearer betting opportunities emerging closer to the Festival. The Triumph Hurdle picture for 2026 is starting to sharpen with several juveniles already attracting market attention in the ante-post lists, even though the key trials are still to be run. NARCISO HAS sits at the head of every books’ markets after impressing in juvenile company and looks to be the early reference point in what is usually a Mullins-dominated division, while SELMA DE VARY has been prominent in early betting as one of the more forward four-year-olds. A handful of others, including PROACTIF and FANTASY WORLD, are lingering in the mix at slightly bigger prices, suggesting there are plenty of different profiles being backed before the season’s Spring Juvenile and Adonis Hurdle trials give a clearer pecking order. Until those key races are run and the ground conditions are known as we move into late winter, the Triumph market remains very much a work in progress.
