What is the Irish Derby?
The Irish Derby is the premier race of the entire Flat season and is open to three-year-old colts and fillies and contest over one mile, four furlongs. With such a top quality racing schedule throughout the summer with the likes of the Guineas Festivals and Royal Ascot taking centre stage, the Irish Derby sits at the same level as those, and has seen some fine winners down the years. First run in 1866, the Irish Derby can often be a destination for those horses that have won the Investec Derby at Epsom earlier in the season, and there have been a host of contenders to do that prestigious double.
Aidan O'Brien has a sensational record in the Irish Derby, winning the race over ten times during his illustrious career, with the likes of Galileo (2001) and Camelot (2012) just two of the standout winners of the Classic.
