What is the Phoenix Stakes?
The Phoenix Stakes is a Group 1 race run at the Curragh over six furlongs in August and is open to two-year-old colts and fillies. Often regarded as one of the premier juvenile races on the Flat racing calendar, it's been a race targeted by all the premier trainers with their star youngsters, and it's a race that can often throw up a multitude of Classic clues for the following season.
First held in 1902, the Phoenix Stakes has grown in stature and was eventually handed Group 1 status in 1979 and has been won by some monumental names during its history. Aidan O'Brien has a sparkling record in the race and the master of Ballydoyle has saddled the likes of George Washington (2005), Holy Roman Emperor (2006) and Mastercraftsman (2008), while in 2019 the Ger Lyons-trained Siskin was victorious before going on to sparkle in the 2020 Irish 2000 Guineas.
What happened in the 2023 Phoenix Stakes?
Bucanero Fuerte was a mightily-impressive four length winner of the Phoenix Stakes in 2023, as the 9/4 shot scooted clear of Porta Fortuna in an impressive display.
